OBA: Platform!
Office Business Applications are made possible by key platform capabilities, called OBA Services, in the 2007 Microsoft Office system. These consist of: workflow, search, the Business Data Catalog, a new, extensible user interface, Microsoft Office Open XML Formats, and the Web Site and Security Framework.

Operational Excellence with OBA:
Combining operational efficiency with the ability to configure a tailored value chain (i.e., Agility) is a capability we call Operational Excellence (OE), and companies that achieve OE outperform in their industry. Agile companies with tailored value chains outperform peers by two to one in revenue growth, and have profit margins 5 to 10 percent above competitors. OBA : Composite Application Architecture

Office Business Applications is a Composite Application Architecture that integrates the Microsoft Office System and Application Platform with Line-of-Business Applications (ERP, CRM, Custom Apps, etc.), allowing end-to-end process execution across application and organizational barriers.

The Architecture utilizes Workflow and Business Rules components to provide Agile Process Structure, and Merges Unstructured Collaboration with Structured Application Data for Complete Process Awareness and Visibility.

OBA Architectural Maturity

Going well beyond SharePoint implementation, a business driven OBA architecture involves:

  • Distributed Operations (reaching beyond SharePoint and mobility sites to off-line processes and external channels for extended execution)

  • Process-Centric Workflow (re-architecting SharePoint’s document-centric workflow components to align with end-to-end business process and provide agile execution)

  • Line-of-Business Application Integration (integrating the Office System with underlying applications to provide the information needed for informed execution)

The maturity model above doesn’t mean you have to achieve one level before you move to the next. If business value is there, and it usually is, then there’s no reason not to move directly to the highest level. Our first client moved directly to a distributed operations enabled business model that recognized over $10,000/day in value. All of subsequent clients exceeded that.

Our role is to help clients reach the top maturity levels quickly and create measureable business value.

Our OBA Services: Leadership, Competency and Solutions Library

We help clients by providing experienced leadership, judgment and competency. We also bring a library of solution components to accelerate implementation and reduce costs and risk:

Our OBA team is led by Ellen Terry, who led Microsoft’s creation of OBA industry solutions (see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb508937.aspx for some of her work). She has 20 years of business architecture experience. She is teamed with Cory Dixon, also a former Microsoft Employee with over 10 years of technical architecture experience, and led some of Microsoft’s largest enterprise implementations. They are supported by a dedicated team of architects and developers to provide whatever resources are needed to get our clients on the fast track to value creation.
